Mai Chau doesn’t have a tourist service per se, but the staff at the new Mai Chau lodge can be pretty helpful, and many villagers speak enough English to help you out if you ask around. One trek we’ve heard of goes 18 km up a mountain about a kilometre above sea level to a H’mong village and typically includes an over night stay.

Due to this rugged splendour Ba Be is sometimes referred to as the ‘Ha Long Bay of the mountains’. The depth of the lake is between 17 and 23m on average, with the deepest point about 35m deep. The surface area of the lake fluctuates between 300 and 500 ha depending upon the season and unlike most lakes in karst limestone landscapes, Ba Be Lake remains full all year round.

Sapa is most beautiful in spring. Apricot, plum and cherry flowers are splendidly beautiful. Markets are crowded and merry, and are especially attractive to visitors. Minority groups come here to exchange and trade goods and products. Market sessions are also a chance for locals to promenade and young men and women in colorful costumes to meet, date or seek sweethearts.
